School Council

Our School Eco Council helps to make positive changes by listening to pupils’ ideas and working with staff to improve our school. A key focus of our work is caring for the environment and encouraging sustainable choices across our school community.

We launched a ‘Cut Your Carbon’ campaign to promote reducing energy use, including switching off lights, having a no-power hour, taking four-minute showers, and introducing Meat-Free Mondays.

The Eco Council meets with kitchen staff to explore how school meals can be made more environmentally friendly. As a result, Meat-Free Mondays are now in place, and food waste is being reduced by allowing pupils to vote for their favourite meals.

Each year, the council supports charitable causes by organising and running stalls at our 'Broadfield Bake Off Bonanza' for Children in Need, raising over £600 this year.

We also care for our local environment through whole-school litter picks and by encouraging families to look after the local area. On a national level, we support conservation by taking part in the RSPB Big Birdwatch, making bird feeders for our wildlife area and submitting our bird counts to support UK-wide conservation.

Becoming a School Councillor

Children in Years 3–6 can apply to join the Eco Council by writing a letter explaining why they would be a good representative. Shortlisted pupils then take part in a mini interview with Mrs Despard to discuss the school values that matter most to them. A shortlist is then selected and they present their ideas to their classmates, who then vote in a democratic secret ballot.

We are very proud of the work of our School Eco Council and the positive difference our pupils are making.
