Intent

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) along with pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development is at the heart of a broad and balanced curriculum at Broadfield Primary School.

Our aims are:

  • For children at Broadfield Primary School to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society who are well prepared for life and work in modern Britain and for future roles within the global community
  • To provide the knowledge, skills and understanding that enables pupils to live a safe, respectful and fulfilling life.
  • To promote British Values through the overarching aims and objectives of the PSHE curriculum
  • To deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all and which enables every child to know more, remember more and understand more.
  • To help children to understand and manage many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.
  • For pupils to appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse community.
  • For pupils to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.

IMPLEMENTATION

At Broadfield Primary School PHSE is delivered:

  • Mainly through the ‘Skills for Life Curriculum’. Children from Years 1 to 6 access lessons weekly through the Zippy, Apple and Passport Schemes.
  • In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provision is through the Early Learning Goals: Self-regulation, Managing Self and Building Relationships. Provision is supplemented with social and emotional learning activities from the Partnership for Children.
  • Discrete activities as a result of an issue that has arisen. E.g. Circle Time.
  • Planned opportunities for discussion, debate and role play.
  • Through school assemblies where children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural curiosity is stimulated, challenged and nurtured.
  • The PSHE curriculum has three core learning themes:
  1. health and wellbeing, (substance misuse, risk taking/safety, emotional health, healthy eating and puberty/growing up)
  2. relationships, (healthy relationships/bullying, coping strategies)
  3. living in the wider world (E-Safety, diversity, financial education, British Values and careers).

Following statutory guidance outlined in the Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education curriculum.

  • Whole school displays support children to make links across the wider curriculum and embed terminology

IMPACT

A successful PSHE curriculum will enable children to:

  • understand, discuss confidently and demonstrate consistently the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual respect, Rule of law and Liberty.
  • be happy and healthy and have positive self-esteem
  • be able to develop positive, healthy relationship with their peers both now and in the future.
  • have the skills to navigate their way through real life situations as they grow up
  • be tolerant and respectful and appreciate difference and diversity
  • be able to manage their emotions and look after their physical and mental wellbeing
  • demonstrate a healthy outlook towards school and learning
  • reach their potential across the wider curriculum
