Welcome to Larch Class!

We hope that you have all had a lovely holiday.

There will be a parents meeting about the phonics test on Wednesday 9th May at 9 o’clock. All Year 1 parents are strongly advised to attend

Reading Books

Please remember to send reading books and book bags in each day.

Please spend quality time and listen to your child read. They need to practise reading aloud as often as possible so they will gain in confidence. Encourage them to sound out tricky words and to use picture clues wherever possible. Ask children to talk about book features, characters and main events of stories.

Please ensure that children take good care of school books and that they are not lost. If they are damaged or lost then unfortunately there will be a £5 charge.

In June, all year 1 children will participate in a phonics test. In order for a child to pass, they need to know all phase 3 and phase 5 sounds. They should be able to segment and blend words independently. Please help your child learn all sounds and to find them in their books. Practise tests will be given for homework.

Homework will be given out every Friday and needs to be completed neatly and brought back in for Monday. Please also encourage your child to practise Year 1 maths targets: these are number bonds to 10 and 20 also 2, 5 and 10 times tables. They need to be secure with these facts and be able to recall them rapidly.

Please also support your child to practise their handwriting and phonics as often as possible.

Homework will be given every Friday and will be collected on Monday. Please support your child at home but DO NOT write for them.

Homework is marked and monitored on a weekly basis so please ensure that your child completes it on time and at a high standard. Encourage your child to take care with their presentation. House points, stickers and certificates will be rewarded for quality homework.

In Science this term, we will be learning about plants and their needs, life cycles of animals and food chains. We will also be finding out about different materials and how these can be used to build bridges and towers.

On June 27th, we will be visiting Blackpool zoo so we can experience a variety of animals first hand.

We have also booked a visitor to come into school and help us to explore mini-beasts and microhabitats within our school environment.

We will be learning about algorithms (how computers are programmed) and writing our own simple programmes for our friends to follow.

Our topic this half term is Towers, Tunnels and Turrets followed by Wiggle and Crawl. We will be exploring famous castles and using our research to write information booklets.

We will be making models of towers, bridges and tunnels and testing their strength in design and technology. Children will also be learning about dragons and fairy stories linked with dragons and castles.

Religious Education

We will be learning about how we celebrate births and marriages in different religions in particular Islamic and Christian ceremonies.

Please encourage your child to come to school every day unless they are ill.
School starts at 8:50am and finishes at 3:15pm. Please collect your child on time.

We will be doing P.E. every Wednesday and Thursday. Kits can be left in school.

Indoor P.E
Kit: navy/black shorts/leggings, white/yellow t-shirt and pumps.

Outdoor P.E
Kit: black tracksuits, white/yellow t-shirt and trainers.

All children need to be fully equipped, no matter what the weather. Please ensure that your child’s name is clearly written in all uniform as we will not be held responsible for missing items. Earrings need to be taken out or covered with a plaster on the day your child has P.E or they will have to sit out due to health and safety.

If you want a chat about your child, please feel free to visit us after school.
Thank you for your continued support.
