Meet our Sport Leaders

TBA

The role of a sports leader is to support active sessions during break and lunchtimes in order to engage children with different types of sports. They also help to run activities for sports day and throughout our PE lessons.

Broadfield Primary School Values and Visions

Whilst at Broadfield we will work hard to demonstrate the values of:

Belief

Respect

Our community

Aspiration

Diversity

Friendship

Inclusion

Equality

Learning

Determination

In line with our mission statement:

‘Together we can achieve’

Intent

At Broadfield Primary School we recognise the importance that physical education plays in the curriculum and are committed to providing all children with opportunities to engage fully in physical education (PE). The aim of our PE programme is to develop children’s basic physical competencies, build confidence in their ability and build the foundations for a lifelong love of sport, physical activity and a healthy lifestyle. We also want to teach children skills to keep them safe such as being able to swim.

PE lessons encourage children to compete against themselves and others whilst being challenged to improve their physical, social, emotional and thinking skills. These skills are embedded in the heart of our planning.

Our PE lessons are planned using the Get Set 4 PE platform, which aligns with our core values and our ‘whole child’ approach to PE.

Our objectives in the teaching of PE align with the National Curriculum in that we aim to ensure all pupils:

  • Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  •  Are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • Engage in competitive sports and activities
  • Lead healthy, active lives

Implementation

We promote Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development and British Values through our PE curriculum:

Spiritual

Through Dance and sports such as Gymnastics pupils are being creative, expressing feelings and emotions in their performances.

Allowing pupils’ reflection time to evaluate their experiences allows them to build a positive mind-set and promotes progression.

Moral

We are a healthy school which means we encourage children to live a healthy lifestyle and promoting healthy living is apparent in each P.E lesson. Pupils develop the ability to distinguish between right and wrong through fair play in sporting events and participating in competitive situations, giving pupils a sense of justice, and how to respond appropriately when they feel there is an injustice. There are frequent opportunities given to pupils to support the importance of abiding by rules.

Social

We develop the necessary skills to work in teams or pairs as most of our PE is based around team sports and activities. Giving the pupils roles such as leaders, coaches, or umpires within lessons offers pupils the opportunity to develop their communication skills, leadership skills and the ability to settle any discrepancies which may occur.

Cultural

Compassion and respect for other cultures and traditions is displayed by all when exploring unfamiliar games or dances. Pupils will discuss how culture affects what sports different nations excel at and how cultural traditions can affect which sports men and women participate in.

Physical Education is delivered using the GetSet4PE scheme, which enables a consistent approach to the delivery of the curriculum across all key stages. The scheme aligns with the requirements of the National Curriculum and provides a clear progression of skills.

The curriculum planning in PE is carried out in three phases (long-term, medium-term and short-term).

The long-term plan maps out the PE activities covered in each term of the year, during each key stage.

The medium-term plans give details of each unit of work for each term. They provide an overview of the unit, links to other areas of the National Curriculum and assessment criteria for that unit.

The short-term lesson plans provide opportunities for children of all abilities to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding in each activity area. As there are some mixed age classes at Broadfield School, these classes take learning objectives for both year groups, in the skill that they are teaching, and create a lesson appropriate for all children through differentiation and high quality teaching.

Lessons can then be differentiated even further for children with additional needs or for children who need to be further challenged using the scheme’s STEP principle programme.

At Broadfield children access two PE lessons each week, each lasting one hour. In addition, teachers have access to ‘Active Blasts’ which provides resources for brain breaks throughout the day.

Children are encouraged to participate in active break and lunchtimes where they have access to sports equipment and structured activities.

All children, including those with additional needs, have the opportunity to, and are encouraged to, participate in after school sports clubs and competitions throughout the school year.

EYFS

Physical development is an integral part of the provision for children in Acorns, Nursery and Reception Classes in line with the Foundations Stage Curriculum and objectives set out in the Early Learning Goals.

Provision enables children to develop confidence and control of the way they move and in the way they handle tools and equipment. We give all children the opportunity to undertake activities that offer appropriate physical challenge, both indoors and outdoors, using a wide range of resources to support specific skills.

KS1

All classes follow the school curriculum map for their long term plans. This is in line with the National Curriculum to ensure all children are developing the skills needed to achieve the age related expectations for their year group. We give all children the opportunity to undertake activities that offer appropriate physical challenge, both indoors and outdoors, using a wide range of resources to support specific skills.

KS2

All classes follow the school curriculum map for their long term plans. The order in which the sports and skills are taught may change year on year for all KS2 classes depending on upcoming competitions and swimming lessons.

Assessment

Children’s progress in PE is assessed by observations during lessons, and through assessing against the specific objectives set out in the National Curriculum. These are recorded using the Get Set 4 PE assessment software. We have clear expectations of what the pupils will know, understand and be able to do at the end of each Key Stage. Teachers are supported with resources to know how to prepare children for their next phase of education. These resources include the Get Set 4 PE progression of skills document, progression ladders and knowledge organisers.

Monitoring and Reviewing

The subject leader for PE will:

  • Supports colleagues in their teaching, providing a strategic lead and direction;
  • Evaluates the strengths and areas for development in the subject through staff and pupil voice questionnaires; lesson observations and by reviewing children’s work
  • Reviews evidence of the children’s work

Impact

At Broadfield Primary School, we ensure that our PE curriculum is progressive and allows children to develop fundamental skills and apply them to a variety of sports and activities.

All children are provided with the opportunities to develop skills and to achieve their personal best.

We encourage our pupils to be physically active and this has positive implications on their learning in the classroom. Children understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of exercise. We hope children enjoy PE and develop a love of sport, and physical activity, that they pursue outside of school and in future life outside of primary school. All pupils understand the values and importance of fair play and being a good sportsperson.

By the time pupils leave school we aim for children to have acquired the skills to self-rescue in the water and swim 25 metres competently.

Health and Safety

We recognise that participation in PE and Physical Activities contains an element of risk. Staff are responsible for ensuring that they are familiar with safe practice to reduce the element of risk to the absolute minimum within their control.

Staff are aware of pupils who have special needs with regards to physical activity and make special provision for needs where appropriate e.g. physical disability, asthma.

Staff know about the safe practices involved in moving and using apparatus.

Pupils wear appropriate clothing, remove jewellery and tie back long hair. If the removal of jewellery or studs is not possible they should be securely taped and the teacher will be confident that this strategy is effective.

It is expected that children wear the appropriate PE kit. Spare kits are kept in school for use where necessary.

Pupils may be asked to remove shoes when participating in indoor activities such as gymnastics, dance and yoga.

Teaching staff should be appropriately dressed to teach PE.

Correct use of equipment is taught along with any potential hazards, including completing a risk assessment for each area/ space that PE and school sport takes place in.

Equipment and apparatus are stored safely at the end of each lesson.

Pupils are taught to consider their own safety and that of others at all times.

An annual Risk Assessment is carried out relating to the school premises, areas where PE is taught and equipment used, including PE equipment as necessary. Risk Assessments are in place for all school sporting trips.
